Baking soda/lightweight oil is a preventative, isn't it? Diluted milk deletes blackspot. I don't know whether it really cures it, but it does erase it. 1/3 or 1/4 skim milk to the balance of water is usually the best...

For what it is worth, I use baking soda on my roses all the time and haven't
noticed any insecticidal action from it....I do notice though that at above
3 tablespoons of baking soda per gallon of water, I start to get some leaf
damage on the very newest foliage.
