I can't think why the dish soap would hurt but just thought I would ask if
you'd observed any difference in the amount of black spot or mildew on those
leaves where water beaded. I've heard descriptions that indicate that may
be a natural defense.

Thank you to all who responded to my question. I sprayed the roses last
week with a week solution of baking soda after pulling off the infected
leaves. New and old growth seems relatively free of black spot and mildew.

It seemed to me that some of the roses had leaves which did not wet down
easily - water beaded and ran off. So, unless I hear that doing so will be
toxic to the plants, I will add a drop of dish soap to the solution to
help reduce the surface tension and spray again tomorrow.
