A light meter for a camera is like a photograph from a camera -- it
records a moment in time.

I think Jacqui was asking how to measure how much light falls on a plant
over the course of a day, which is a much more difficult, and more
interesting, question. I'm sure there are scientifc instruments that can
measure the amount of light energy that falls on a site over a period of
time, but they wouldn't be something the average home gardener would have
in his garage.

I'm thinking solar lights. You can get them now for five bucks a piece or
less. If you put one where it gets light from dawn to dusk and another
where you want to measure the light, you could watch how long one lasts
as opposed to the other and get the total light as a percentage of the
optimum. It would hardly be laboratory precision, but it would give you a
better idea than eyeballing it. Probably close enough for plant purposes.
