my two cents...or less...think bonsai. The Japanese have been able to grow plants in very small pots or containers for hundreds and hundreds of years. Part of the trick is the root/shoot relationship. Just prune the roots and you're asking for trouble. Just prune the shoots and...same problem. Obviously there's more to it than this and I don't want to sound simplistic but the root/shoot rule is a good place to start if you want to try to save the plant.
