Dear Anna,

If you do cover the bed with pea stone, put tarps of a manageable size
over the stone during June fruit drop and in autumn. Pull off the tarps
every few days to move the dropped fruit and/or leaves to the compost
pile. --That's more work than simply letting things lie where they drop,
but does remove a few of the pests such as plum cucurlio that lurk in the
dropped fruit. Choose a color that isn't too offensive, and you can
probably learn to live with the tarps during the times you have them in
place.

Best,

Miranda Smith
