I guess I should have pointed out that our nights are cool, a benefit enjoyed by most of the inland West. We also enjoy very low humidity and do not enjoy water shortages. I think slugs are active every day, but probably just wait for night. I don't know whether snakes are nocturnal or not.

If it gets too hot, the snakes would just move. The critical time is in the spring, when the snakes need more warmth to be active and it's still cool and moist enough for slugs to be out. Probably by the time the weather gets hot the slugs are mostly gone or have become dormant, anyway.
