Portland, OR, Zone 8

I have had a morning glory infested bed (about 7 x 40) covered with heavy garden fabric and am now trying to decide what to cover it with. I garden organically. Because of knee and back problems, I am trying to simplify care. The bed is slightly mounded and has three semi dwarf fruit trees. There are also cats, my own and others who like to hang out in this sunny area. My question: I am thinking of pea gravel as it will hold the heat, not be a carrier of flea eggs, wont be mistaken for cat litter, wont get mixed into fur, etc. but don't know what caring for it will be like during fruit drop season (plum, cherry, apple) or in autumn with wet, disintegrating leaves. I would be grateful for any comments or suggestions as to care or alternative mulch/covering.
Thanks
Anna Ingre
