This whole discussion started because I wondered aloud what the ldconfig
advice was doing in the UG.

If you're going to set the defaults to

./configure --with-prefix=/usr/local --sysconfdir=/etc

starting with 0.60, I'd like to drop the ldconfig advice from the UG. OK
by you?
