Loren

thanks for your outline. I have just returned from a live
reading of the entire epistle at one sitting - takes less
than an hour comfortably. It was read by a young woman
about 20 - very clearly. She had prepared but not
excessively.

Our reading is the beginning of a two year study. The first
thing I wondered was 'could this have been read in a house
of prayer where some might not have been introduced already
to Jesus Christ'?

If Nanos is right, then there must have been a custom to
welcome visiting readers in the houses of prayer. To what
extent was Jesus the subject of discussion at this time
among Jews in Rome? What authority would a visiting reader
have? Is Esler right in suggesting Phoebe could have read
the letter? And if so to what sort of gathering?

Clearly it is both feasible and meaningful to read it at one
sitting.

Bob
