Dear Jim, I'm not talking about the historical Jesus at all. I'm simply
trying to understand Paul, and specifically Phil. 2:6ff. I'm using Dunn to
try to do it.
(Jeffrey, I wrote to Dunn, thanks. I've not heard back.)

Best to you,
Liz

You are on the right track. Paul had never heard of the "historical Jesus," never read one of the four gospels, was informed by some pieces of earlier Christian tradition, and applied this material to the needs of congregations. He was not a theologian in the sense of working out a systematic theology.
And I think it possible, in spite of Jim West, that Augustine and Luther may just have latched on to something that really is in Paul.
