Partition and unity are not necessarily incompatible.
Since Paul regretted having sent the tearful letter (2 Cor 7:8) he may well
have sent a message to Titus-Timothy (via one of the bearers of 1 Cor)
telling him not to hand the tearful letter to the church after reading it
to them. The Corinthians may have thought this a bit sneaky (2 Cor 1:12?),
so when Paul wrote 2 Cor he appended a copy of the tearful letter to the
end of his letter to show that he had nothing to hide. Thoughts, anyone?
