Friday, June 27
Bull City (http://www.bullcitytheband.com/)
Pneurotics (http://www.myspace.com/pneurotics)
Pizza Palace, Durham

It's maybe no secret that I'm a big fan of shows at restaurants and other nontraditional venues. Blame my small-town punkrock upbringing, or maybe just my fondness for eating at shows. Or the fact that it's fun to see a band right-up-close, which is usually the only way you see 'em at places like pizza joints.

Anyway, bravo to the Pizza Palace for reaching out to the indie-rockers (although both Bull City and the Pneurotics are about as straight-ahead rock as indie-rock gets around these parts, so the Palace regulars shouldn't be too alarmed).

Friday, June 27
Dexter Romweber and the New Romans (http://www.myspace.com/dexterromweber)

Dex's New Romans are his large (gtrs, drums, horns, keys) band.

Friday, June 27
Dry Heathens (http://www.myspace.com/dryheathens)
Grappling Hook (http://www.myspace.com/torchmaraudersgrapplinghook)
Double Down, Raleigh

Durham invades Raleigh for the night. The Grappling Hook played BCHQ last week & Dave nearly took out half the crowd when he started swinging a real live grappling hook around his head.

Sunday, June 29
Bowerbirds (http://www.bowerbirds.org)
Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Durham

Another in the Duke Performances series of NC artists playing in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. If you haven't seen Bowerbirds in a while, perhaps you've forgotten how great they are. Bring a picnic; it starts at 7:00.

Sunday, June 29
Flicker (http://www.chapel-hill.nc.us/flicker)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is the "Attack of the 50-foot Reels" version of Flicker, wherein intrepid local filmmakers show off the results of a single day spent writing & shooting a short film on a single reel of Super-8 film, with only in-camera editing (i.e. you shoot in sequence, and every shot counts).

Sunday, June 29

Loto Ball Show (http://www.myspace.com/lotoballshow)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

I saw Silver Apples at the Cradle back in the '90s sometime, long before Simeon broke his neck in the car wreck. It was a damn weird show then. I can only try to imagine what it'll be like now.

Sunday, June 29
Lonely H.
Sikamor Rooney

Monday, June 30
Spider Bags (http://www.myspace.com/spiderbags)
King Khan and the Shrines (http://www.myspace.com/kingkhantheshrines)

Wednesday, July 2
Polynya (http://www.myspace.com/polynyapolynya)
Kapow! Music (http://kapowmusic.net)
Balthrop, Alabama (http://balthropalabama.com/)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Balthrop, Alabama are a band, a really large band, which is a trend that I find mystifying on the one hand (dude! gas is $4 a gallon! hatchback tours are in! plus nobody goes to shows anymore, and 1/9th of $10 is $1.11, give or take a penny), but on the other hand it's so totally obvious that bands with 9 people are gonna have to be at least 3 times as fun as bands with 3 people. Or something like that. Anyway. They have a great video on their website: http://balthropalabama.com/#explodevideo

Thursday, July 3
The Warlocks (http://www.thewarlocks.com/)
The Black Angels (http://www.theblackangels.com)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, July 4
Evil Wiener (http://www.evilwienerworld.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

This is the 7th Annual Evil Wiener Roast, hosted (of course) by Evil Wiener. Come early for hot dogs & whatnot in the back parking lot, and stay later for our heroes' tribute to Our Great Nation.

Friday, July 4
Ruscha (http://www.myspace.com/ruscha)
Black Skies (http://blackskies.us/)
Tooth (http://www.myspace.com/toothrocks)

After you're done celebrating the 4th in whatever manner suits you, head down to Reservoir and celebrate your Constitutional right to have your face melted off by massive slabs of metal.

Saturday, July 5
Charles Latham (http://www.myspace.com/sircharleslatham)
Monologue Bombs (http://www.myspace.com/themonologuebombs)
The Tourist (http://www.myspace.com/thetouristnc)
Box Five (http://www.myspace.com/boxfivemusic)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Charles Latham used to live around here, but then his Terri Gross obsession got the best of him and he moved to Philadelphia, where he splits his time between the street outside of WHYY, and the Mutter Museum.

Monologue Bombs are the great solo voice-and-accordion side-project of Goner singer Scott Phillips.

Wil Donegan and the Apologies
Birds & Arrows (http://www.myspace.com/birdsandarrows)
Jack Sprat Cafe, Chapel Hill

This is the first night of the Club is Open Festival (http://www.myspace.com/theclubisopenfestival08), which takes place at various venues around Chapel Hill (no overlapping!) for most of this week.

Tuesday, July 8
Pykrete (http://www.bullfightparty.org/cirox/pykrete)
Boyzone (http://www.myspace.com/boyszone)

Chuck Johnson (Pykrete) is back, for now, from Mills College in Oakland. No telling what mysterious new noisemaking equipment he may have fabricated while he was away.
