Okay, one more post and I swear I'll stop...but, you know, it just hit
me...during the two years I was in business school (in Claremont, CA,
45 minutes from LA) - I can only recall going to a handful of rock
shows, and only two (Edith Frost, Mia Doi Todd) that didn't involve
some guest list action. The only time I went to the local equivalent
of the Cradle, The Glass House in neighboring Pomona, was to see
Superchunk. AND, I was DJ'ing at the college station KSPC (which is
really good!)

Putting more thought into this, it was partly because I didn't know
many people in that scene really, and chose to spend more time with my
MBA friends, despite their lack of interest in music.* And even though
my girlfriend at the time WAS a big music fan, I don't ever recall us
actively pursuing live music as an option. Don't have any great
insight beyond the fact that I'm sure the Glass House owner had similar
concerns that I do as a club owner...and that, to a certain degree,
people want to spend time with their friends, wherever that might lead
them.

* A perfect example, one my friends gave me a ride and he had the
Vanilla Ice cassette in his stereo. This was 1999 - and it wasn't as a
joke...
