"Take the technical brutality of The Dillinger Escape Plan, the raw emotion
from Gravity Records' discography, and the experimentation of The Locust and
you would have a rough skeletal outline of The Great Redneck Hope's sound.
The Great Redneck Hope is pure metallic power and chaotic brutality with
every musical muscle working to merge hardcore, noise, and metal to an apex
of violent sound. Riddled with catharsis that scrapes your mind and riles
emotions so primal that they could have come from a caveman. Yet, The Great

violence that tears chords and twists tempo shifts into a sound that is
proficient as it is potent." - Ryan Potts/Skyscraper Magazine

So... uh... what _are_ you talking about? We've had plenty of good shows
in the last few months.

Hey a.m.c-h'ers, this is Chris Clemmons from Regina Hexaphone. My wife
and I are contemplating a move to the Chapel Hill area from Raleigh,
and we recently looked at a house we liked in the Northwood
neighborhood (off MLK, between Eubanks and Weaver Dairy Rd). I was
just wondering if anybody had any sort of impressions of Northwood
and/or the nearby area. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if we do move, I'd be commuting daily to Raleigh (or, hopefully,
car/vanpooling). Anybody else doing that commute? Does it suck really
hard? CAC

i wonder if "legal seafood" was coined by the same guy who named
"sanitary fish market" in morehead city ;)

both names sort of make one scratch one's head. haven't been to the
morehead place in 20 years, but was good eatin' then as i recall. maybe
not as good as el's drive in.

Sorry about the double post... google was doing weird things yesterday.
Anyway, please allow me to clarify that I'm talking about the
Northwood that is north of Weaver Dairy (older '70's neighborhood)...
apparently there is also a newer Northwood neighborhood south of Weaver
Dairy. Thanks for your time. CAC

The commute from CH to Raleigh is usually no problem (I do it every day).
The
major congestion is in the opposite direction of your commute, so every
morning
you will observe a logjam between the Park and Cary (going westbound as you
head
east); and every afternoon you will see thousands going back eastbound as you
head back to Chapel Hill, especially at the I-40/Wade split. The only time
you
will ever have a problem with the commute (other than just the time/distance
invested) is if there's a bad wreck, which is the case anywhere.

I'm crazy about the short-lived (late 90s) DeArmond Starfire series that
Guild built in Korea. They have great semi-hollow tone, but you can also
play them loud and with distortion, because the body cavity is divided
in two. Hard to change the strings on the bigsby models, though.

I have the opposite impression: I can set my cruise control to 75 and not
bother changing speed every morning in my commute from Raleigh to CH, but it
seems like all the eastbound traffic gets boggled by the rising sun and slows
and congeals in the climb out of the crabtree creek slough. In the evenings,
post-Durham expressway west-bound traffic gets bottle-necked in the final run
to the 54 exit.

I hit the road around 7:30 in the morning and 4:30 in the evening. If I
don't make it past the SAS exit by 5:00, I am screwed. I've been doing this
commute ever since just after 40 was completed between the Park and CH and
this is the best it's ever been.

Maybe it's the timing. I'm usually leaving CH between 8:00 and 8:15, and I
never have any trouble eastbound.

In the evening, I don't leave Raleigh until 6, so I'm reaching CH kind of
late,
and maybe all the traffic has thinned out (going west -- it's certainly nasty
at
the 40/Wade split). I do notice a backup at 54 going into town if I go home
a
little early, but since I use 86 it's not a problem for me.

It's all timing in both directions. John wouldn't enjoy his commute
nearly as much if he were consistently leaving 20-30 minutes later, and
I can guarantee that, having done it myself for a couple of years ;-)

I think if we're going to generalize, generally speaking, averaged
across the full rush-hour range, commuting to & from home in CH & work
in Raleigh will be slightly less painful than the inverse, although as
more & more people have started filling in the available land around 751
& Fayetteville Road south of I-40, it has gotten worse, and will
continue to do so. Nevertheless, at present the I-40 widening, which
simply brought the Raleigh->RTP leg up to its already-needed capacity,
has left the CH->RTP leg with a wee bit of extra capacity. Won't last
long, though.

In any case, these commute options will ALL be more painful than living
close to work, assuming work is something you plan to do daily for the next
umpty-zillion years.

Chris: what makes you want to move that far away from work? I ask
because a few years ago I bought land in Chatham County about 12 miles
west of Chapel Hill, which added 15-18 minutes to my commute (bringing
it to 35-40 minutes total). "No biggie," I thought, "what's 15 extra
minutes?" Ha. Everybody has a butt-clock for how long they can sit in
the car before they start to get antsy, and it turns out mine is set at
around 25-30 minutes.

It's not a life-ruining thing, but it will annoy you more than you might
think now.
