I would still like to boot (to DOS or with lilo) from a bootable CD or pcmcia flash card. Do they have special boot sectors like FD and HD? Or do I simply make an .iso of the few files put onto a hard drive by DOS 'sys' command and burn to a CD?

Ultimate Boot CD has several options:
DOS/Linux boot disks
Boot First Hard Disk
Boot Second Hard Disk

First Hard Disk booted to the OS on hda1 of another laptop, which happened to be XP. (The desktop without Windows does not boot from any CD-ROM).
XP was already on here in a FAT32 partition when I got it. Normally I get a choice of that or 'Windows' (DOS 7.1) when booting from hard drive.

DOS gave me several choices. FreeDOS took a few minutes to boot because it kept asking about support for scsi, usb, lfn, etc. It is designed
for running 'DOS apps' and ends up on R or Q (I forget) but I can type c:
and then load BL with loadlin.

I will try a simpler faster-booting CD for this purpose. Turns out the laptop won't boot MOST of the time from at least three hard drives which do boot in other computers, but will recognize them. Very odd. Something interesting must have happened to the IDE controller since
it does still boot CDs and let me mount hard disk partitions once I boot to linux. Does not read floppies at all. The original 5GB drive stopped booting but a replacement booted until yesterday - maybe the drive damaged the controller or vice versa somehow.

Has anyone booted from pcmcia devices? In addition to CF card and adaptor, I have a pcmcia IBM Travelstar hard drive, big enough to run BL from (700MB?).
