I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 480CDT. It's a 200MHz Pentium I with 32mb of ram and a 4gb hard drive.

I received it with a wiped hard drive, and attempted to put BasLinux on it so I could use it as a secondary laptop (my ThinkPad 600E finally died after 11 years).

I used fdisk and mke2fs to format the hard drive, used the install to hard drive command and set up Lilo to boot from the hard drive.

I rebooted the laptop to test it, and it said," Please insert disk and press enter."

I thought there might be something wrong with the boot sector, so I tried to install Windows 95 without Internet Exploder (there's about 15 floppies), and whenever it tries to scan the hard disk for errors and such after formatting, it fails. I tried this with 2.1gb hard drive and the same thing happened.

Using loadlin with Damn Small Linux hangs after it states the processor speed.

Is this a hardware error?

Yes, I do it often.  First I download the flv file
(eg filename.flv) and save it to /tmp, then I open
an xterm and execute:  mplayer /tmp/filename.flv

Steven

I do that all the time. I don't have an internet connection home
(except my cell phone) so I go to the library and find the video then
copy the url then go to one of the download-you-tube places you can
find them with google and save the video on my usb-pen go home then i
usually have to change the name from  filename to filename.flv and
then I con play the video with mplayer. I compiled mplayer my self but
it has no extra codec only the standart packages /mikkel

Hi Mikkel,
So, I think that my problem may be the Mplayer version or my video
configuration (I?m using xvesa). I don?t know exactly how to compile the
Mplayer can you please explain?

Thanks

Marcelo

Which version are you using?
I'm using Mplayer 1.0pre7try2-3.2.3

> or my video configuration (I?m using xvesa).

What color depth are you using?
I'm using 15.

There is no need to compile it.  We have a pre-compiled
version available.

Cheers,
Steven

BL2 on a Toshiba Satellite 420CDT, 100MHz, 24MB RAM.
Custom 2.2.16 kernel with sound support as modules.

Chips and Technology video works at 800x600 with X_SVGA.
svgalib works with the default drive (with libvga.config set to chipset
VGA - it works in full color, otherwise won't display jpegs).

Audio chip is said to be ESS688, which is fully sb compatible.
It appears to be ISA not PCI, since after I
insmod soundcore
insmod soundlow (2.2.16 kernel)
insmod sound
insmod uart401
insmod opl3 io=0x388 [for FM synthesis of midi sounds]
insmod sb

I am told io irq and dma are obligatory  (ISA not PCI sound chip)
Web research suggests irq 10.

insmod sb io=0x220 irq=10 dma=1

sb:  dsp reset failed
sb: init_module:  sb: Device or resource busy.

This suggests I have the wrong module (not an sb-compatible).
(One BL newbie reported these same error messages to linuxquestions and
turned out to have a non-sb sound chip onboard).

What else might I try?  I could make a Smart Boot Manager floppy boot disk
and try to boot DSL from CD (non-graphical, type DSL 2 at Boot:
prompt) and see if it will identify the chip, but someone else reported
that DSL does not work with a similar Toshiba model.  Several websites
say this model has ESS688 which is sb.

I could try a Slackware bare.i kernel (or is there a specific sound
kernel?).

I also have a DELL with ESS1688 sound that supposedly is also sb.

For having had a similar laptop, isn't your soundchip controlled
by the bios, adress, irq and dma wise, since this chip uses sb emulation
and not compatibility if I remember correctly.

Hope this can help.

For Toshiba laptops, to enter CMOS, press ESC, get a message to check
system and hit F1, which I did.

I found numerous websites listing SETUP keys: DEL F1 F2 F3 F10 INS TAB
CTRL-ESC, or CTRL-ALT plus S Enter or ESC, or hit Reset 2X.  One model
uses Ctrl-Alt-F11.

I found a line for Sound IO/IRQ/DMA and it was set to 240 not 220.  I
changed this to 220 and sound now installs without complaints.

I have the sound devices but need to add some sound players and sounds and
I can then take this laptop to the library with my Aero340 wireless card
and headphones and listen to streaming audio while downloading mplayer
source code.  (I wrote David Moberg asking if he could compile the latest
version against uclibc for us - his is 3 years old.  Or teach me how).
Or listen to library CDs with the built-in CD drive.  (It comes with a
plug-in external floppy drive to make it lighter to carry around).

It seems to display better at 800x600 than 640x480 (fills the screen).
There is an option to 'stretch' the text, meaning you get nice looking
text full size.  My Gateway 200MHz gives a choice of scrawny stretched or
small unstretched text, two Compaq Armadas have no choice and only use 3/4
of the screen for nice-looking text, and the Compaq Presario offers only
the stretched scrawny text.  I highly recommend this model for linux.

SVGA server is working with the Chips and Technology 6550 video using
Steven's XF86Config but with

HorizSync 31.5 37.9
VertRefresh 50 60

Modeline 640x480 --  change the last four numbers to 480
491 493 525 Modeline 800x600 -- change the 36 to 35

I modified the modelines (probably from someone else's posting) - see my
XF86Config.laptops file posted at http://keesan.freeshell.org/blfiles.htm
(which also works with the newer Toshiba 335CDS, a 133MHz Hitachi, and a
Gateway with Neomagic NM2160, Thinkpads, probably others from 1996-1998).
Substitute for XF86Config in /etc and use X_SVGA server.  2MB video RAM.

Nice small laptop because you can leave floppy drive at home (external).
(The 335CDS lets you switch between FD and CD but you can't have both, and
it does not work with my Orinoco wireless cards if I recall correctly).
Comes with one speaker, speaker out, VOL dial, mike and line-in.

CMOS lets you set hard drive and display power-down time, and switch from
color to MONO.  (Why?).  1996.

This list is great!  Thanks!

It should also allow framebuffer text at 800x600.  Not tested yet.  My
framebuffer kernels are larger.

You can change that in BIOS to 5 for use with DOS sound.

Would have worked with io=0x240.

Nope, wrong io.

Toshiba 420CDT.

The sound is now working.
io=0x220 set in BIOS after booting with ESC, F1 and changing 240 to 220.

I can play mp3s with mpg-123 or another small mp3 player (play-mp3) which
I just uploaded (168K for glibc 2).

I have not installed sox to play wav files, or mplayer.

Workbone wants me to turn on Numlock (which is turned off in BIOS, and I
don't see a NumLock key to turn it on with).  mcdp (a small cd player that
does not require the number pad and should work under X without any
special options) says status invalid and cannot find any tracks.  ???

My 505K zimage.fsm kernel supports sound (sb and other modules) and vesafb
(framebuffer).  If I boot with vga=788 I see a penguin and also more rows
and columns of text (800x600 mode).  xfbdev (provided by David Moberg,
needs libm.so.5) works and is about 969K.  Xvesa is 869K.  The SVGA server
is over 3MB and uses 4.5 times the RAM of Xvesa or xfbdev.  Is there any
advantage to xfbdev over Xvesa?

loadlin zimage.fsm root=/dev/hda2 rw vga=788

BL3 also works with vesafb using this same 2.2.16 kernel, at 800x600
xfbdev works.

My 480K zimage.sb should also work for sound, but without framebuffer.

My 2.4.31 laptop kernel has no sound or framebuffer support.

I may compile a small 2.4.31 kernel for P1 laptops with USB ports, sb and
vesafb.

top and ps are not working on the laptop.
top: scandir ('/proc'):  Function not implemented.
ps lists no processes.  I have a /proc with lots in it.
?????
