Is it possible for you unplug the ethernet cable
from the desktop and connect it to your laptop?
You should then be able to use the IP address
assigned to your desktop. Or, if your desktop
gets a fresh address each reboot (via DHCP), you
could run udhcpc on the laptop (after plugging
in the ethernet cable and getting two high beeps).

The other alternative (which is easier) is to
run an ethernet cable between your laptop and
another computer. Using ifconfig, you could
then assign compatible IP addresses to each
system and ping between them. This will prove
that your hardware is working.

Cheers,
Steven
