Sindi,
thank you very much for help and hints.

I have bl3 on a 486 with 12 Mb RAM and bl2 a pentium S with 32 Mb Ram.

On bl3 I have links-0.95 (no ssl) and Lynx (with ssl) from your site.

Try also the links2 that I recently compiled without graphics support but with ssl for glibc2 (add the operalib.tgz package first and run ldconfig), which uses much less memory than lynx and shows tables and frames.

Or the elinks that I just compiled with ssl support, which has similar dependencies. I am unable to add the javascript support because I cannot understand the instructions or they don't work.

With Lynx I can access gmail and that is ok. On that machine I do not need to have more.

I would like, if possible, to install links-0.98 or links-0.95 (with ssl) because I find links fast and ease to use but reading the thread I see the matter is puzzling for me.

They are not available with SSL support for libc5. If you add glibc from Slackware 8.1, or my operalib.tgz package, you can use the links2 or elinks that I compiled with ssl support. links2 is more similar to links. elinks acts a bit differently.

The executable for links-0.98 Steven suggested does not work (i.e. I am not able to get it work).

A version of links-0.98 with ssl could be a useful add on for bl2 and bl3......

Steven said he was unable to compile links against libc5 with SSL support.
I am not set up to compile for libc5. Since I already compiled links2 and elinks with SSL, I am not interested in compiling plain links 0.9X for glibc. So use lynx, or add glibc libraries.

The version of links 0.98 I installed needs openssl (before installation) as
stated on links site which I did not read carefully.

Does it need dynamic openssl libraries? What does ldd tell you?

Sorry, I installed links-0.98 on the other machine on bl2 and then I uniinstalled (pkgtool).

On this machine (32 Mb Ram, 64 Ram swap and bl2 ) I will install your links2 with ssl.

Good choice. Try also elinks with ssl.

Anyway I think that your future Elinks package would be the best choice for a text browser with ssl (and java?).

Me too, but I think it is beyond my abilities to compile.

I know that openssl works with lynx-uclibc-static so maybe someone more knowledgeable can compile elinks with javascript against uclibc.

The links2-1pre28 that I posted has minimal javascript support that does not work any place I tested except a site with examples.

Thank you very much again.
Regards,

Giuseppe

Or the delilinux links2 with ssl support and X support.
(It does not have ssl support.)

I did not installed links2 because I read in your site it is not sure it has
ssl support and because I have only 12 Mb RAM.

The one I compiled does have ssl support. You can use it in text mode.

First make a shorter symlink in /usr/local/bin.
ln -s links2-1pre33-svgalib-ssl links2

Then type links2

I don't know if there is some way to use it in text mode without the
dependencies, if you don't need them. If you like I will recompile it
without graphics, or zlib, or libbz2, but for glibc 2.2.5 since that is
what I am set up for.

If you don't look at huge images in graphics mode it should work fine with
12MB RAM and a 24MB swap partition or file.

I downloaded lynx from your site and it works with ssl.
I wanted to have links (0.98 or any other version with ssl) because it is
fast and easy to use for me.

The version of links 0.98 I installed needs openssl (before installation) as
stated on links site which I did not read carefully.

Does it need dynamic openssl libraries? What does ldd tell you?

http://keesan.freeshell.org/bl/openssl-solibs-0.97-i386-1-SW81.tgz

contains the dynamic libraries for openssl from Slackware 8.1
(which should work if you added glibc from SW8.1 or 9.0).
openssl version 0.97 is required for security.

Sindi

Thanks again.
