Assuming the DVD players is hdd (secondary slave)

ln -s /dev/hdd /dev/dvd

Load the sound drivers. Put in the DVD.
You can set the sound (oss) and video (vesa, or if you prefer, x11 but
load X) defaults in a config file, or specify as:

mplayer -ao oss -vo vesa dvd://1-20

vesa won't work if Xvesa won't work, for instance if you have ctmouse loaded in DOS before booting you will be told you have a DOS TSR.

I was just informed that vesa mode is much more cpu intensive than x11.
vesa used 66% of my cpu time (1.2GHz cpu!) and 1.8% of memory.
x11 (used without a window manager) only 39% and .4%.

To watch DVDs without a window manager:

(Xvesa -screen 800x600x16 &); DISPLAY=:0 mplayer -ao oss -vo x11 -alang en -slang en -framedrop dvd://1-10

Xvesa -listmodes will tell you if you have a better mode for playing
720x480x16-bit DVDs. Look for anything in the 700s. (Xvesa -screen 720x576x16 &) ....

How does one make vidix work with mplayer? You are supposed to specify which vidix library to use (nvidia_vid for instance). The man page is not specific on how to do this.

Optionally add

-framedrop or -hardframedrop
if you lose sound, on a slow cpu or video card (500 MHz, or PCI video)

-alang en (English talking - one DVD got it wrong and Barbara Streisand
spoke French through the American film).

-slang en (for English subtitles

Read the man page for keyboard commands. / and * change volume. m mutes.
spacebar stops. ESC escapes (exits). On reset from vesa mode type reset
to get back your cursor.
