danger will robenson!! -never- connect line level to the mic input...
you can damage the soundcard the sound source or both... the mic
connector outputs ~2volts to drive an electret mic and the audio
portion is designed to be a bit more sensitive to the incoming
audio...

A lot haw bin posted over the week end. Men whole I have had time to
try out something and got in to problem. I have sox with rec and I
wanted to test with a line in from a radio. After trying different
things with aumix and the line I got the sound from the radio coming
out of the laptop speakers. It was only when I got the wire in line in
that I would work, not with the mic-in-socket. Now I got the sound
coming out of the laptop speaker I thought it would definitely work to
record the incoming sound with

rec hello.wav

But it would not. The file was made but there is noting on it. No
sound. I have tested that I am able to play other wav files but
hello.wav is soundless. I´d like to try David's (god to hear from you
aging David)

make sure line-in is set to record and not just play... (press
spacebar when over the 'line-in' mixer setting)

cat /dev/dsp >recording.au

(I wonder how you stop this?)

ctrl+c ?

but I can´t test that here on my work.
