Is it reasonable to expect old computers running BasicLinux to
do everything that a contemporary computer with a contemporary,
multi-media oriented (very large) OS will do?

_Can_ They? Sure. With added hardware and software, but then you
aren't using an old computer. You are using an old computer that
has been modernized. And you aren't running BasicLinux, you are
running Slackware.

And it takes considerable skill and knowhow to accomplish, and
a lot of time and effort specifically devoted to each such
"upgrading". As well as some money, though the old computer is
usually free.

Some people enjoy that sort of thing, and have the time to devote
to it. Their contributions on a list devoted to a distro like
BasicLinux are invaluable.

But most people don't have the inclination and time to master
those skills and to apply them. They just want a functioning
computer/OS.

It seems to me, that if someone wants to use an old, probably
free, computer, without too much hassle, they are going to have
to accept the simple fact that it will never perform like windows
XP or Slackware 11.0.

If they want a computer that _will_ perform like those OSs, then
they would be much better off just buying a new or secondhand
contemporary computer and installing one of those OSs.

Or, someone could be like me. I have a relatively modern computer
but enjoy the simplicity and efficiency of BasicLinux and have
chosen it over any of the contemporary, windoze-clone distros,
which I could easily install and run.

It doesn't do everything that Slackware 11.0 or XP does, and I
couldn't care less. It does all the things that matter.
