Already answered it. :)
I was able to replicate your key misbehaviour in the 50MB loop file
when running X (icewm), and I was able to fix it with Sindi's
xmodmap.84.
And it is a "proper fix". Setting parameters like that is very much
a part of Linux, from what I have seen.
