  • Subject: [BL] networking from BL3 to XP
  • Date: Sun, 3 Sep 2006 02:56:14 +0000 (UTC)

We are on vacation and took along two cameras, an Olympus with serial cable that works in DOS and linux (photopc), which we downloaded slowly to the Toshiba laptop computer via the serial port (it does not do USB).

The second camera requires USB to download the photos.

Our host has Windows XP and USB port, also parallel port (we can't find our parallel transfer cable and it may not have come along on this trip), and floppy drive. We downloaded photos from the second camera.

He has a wireless internet connection using an antenna stuck out the window and a friendly neighbor's ISP (at top speeds of up to 44K at good moments).

Last year we transferred files from BL3 to XP or Mac via a 'DSL modem', uploading an d downloading via a website. Can't do that this time, no hub.

He has a network card and a crossover cable. We have a PCMCIA network card with straight cable, and a separate straight cable (also a crossover adaptor).

We transferred the Olympus photos to the Toshiba laptop and the other camera (USB) to the XP desktop and would now like to copy them all between computers. The Toshiba was chosen because it has a floppy drive (and because we did not realize it has no USB port - the Hitachi has USB but no floppy drive).

We have 5MB of 200K photos of old buildings and Indian mounds and friends (27 of them) and about 13 500K photos of wild mushrooms (7MB) to transfer and would rather not use a floppy disk.

I brought 2-floppy BL3, and can try to figure out (using XP) which network module to use on the desktop. I have a 16-bit 3com PCMCIA NIC in the laptop. But is it possible to network and send files between XP and BL3?

The Toshiba appears to have an IR port, and we have a PDA with IR port. How impossible would it be to set up IR in BL3 and transfer files via the PDA (which we can use in linux already)? Does the 'big' kernel support IR (with the proper modules)?

Next trip we will pack parallel and nullmodem cables, parport zip drive....
