Original question - why Steven did not post both pcmcia scsi modules:

I looked at the set of pcmcia modules that I compiled from the latest pcmcia source code and the sym module is not there but the aha is. I would have to track down the module source code and learn how to compile a module (which I already failed at for an ethernet card, in fact I managed to destroy BL on that computer in trying).

There is no real need to use the laptops with external SCSI drive for file transfer now that I have pcmcia ethernet cards working. It would have been impressive though, also with a scsi scanner.

Question why BL2 works with 2.4.X but not 2.2.X kernels on one computer that happens to be the PIII:

Do you have any idea why the 700MHz PIII won't work with BL2
and older kernel but it will with BL3

It's nice that BL3 works with a PIII, but it really
doesn't matter. BL3 is targetted at 486 and P1.
I'm more interested in 386s than PIIIs.

People are now throwing out 700MHz around here. I have something that
works on one (BL2 with 2.4.31 kernel, BL3 with any kernel) but I was
hoping to learn something about how they differ and why BL3 would work
where BL2 would not. Something about busybox during boot? Is there
anything I could try changing in BL2 to get it working with 2.2.26?

Apparently I would need to change glibc to an earlier version or recompile it myself to work with 2.2.16 and later kernels (--enable-kernel-2.2.16 or similar).

I upgraded BL2 but not BL3 on that computer to SW91 glibc to run qemu (because I have the CD for 9.1 and not 9.0 and I don't want to mix solibs and regular libs or download 9.0 regular libs).

Which kernels do 9.0 and 9.1 use? The 9.1 glibc appears to have been compiled to work only with the 9.1 kernel (or at least a 2.4.X kernel) and not 2.2.26 or earlier.

So the PIII is unlikely to have anything to do with it - I just never tried out BL2 with older kernels after changing glibc from SW8.1 to SW 9.1.

I could continue using only the newer kernel in BL2 or downgrade glibc to 9.0 (has anyone tried that with kernel 2.2.16?) or 8.1, or upgrade it to 10.2 so I can use recent precompiled programs.

Or buy a 9.0 CD and upgrade to that glibc if it is compiled to work with 2.2.16 kernels.
