People are now throwing out 700MHz around here.
Lucky you. Old Pentiums are still selling for real money
here. At a computer show last weekend, I saw a 500MHz
Celeron system for $300 ( !!! computer show special !!! ).
Even 133MHz desktops sell for $30; laptops even more.
People gave us their 133-200MHz computers starting five years ago, we recycled most of them since then. You can't give away a 233MHz here and people have given us lots of 300-400MHz that work (and some that don't) and a working 500. The 700MHz had a bad video card and bad power supply.
Our newest computer is generally about 6-7 years old.
Dell has a discount store here with new computers for $300.
The local community college was selling off its old Dells (maybe without monitor, not sure) for $10-60, to students.
It is a student town, with some rich students. The 400MHz was next to a dumpster with part of the cover missing (and no cards or RAM). The 700 was in a dumpster. The 600 was dead but only need 6 new capacitors. The 500 was in perfect condition from a friend who bought a new Mac. (It looks like a fishtank when not in use).
I let people know I was using SCSI and got three cards, a computer with scsi card and drive, and scsi pcmcia. And a few scanners and zip drives. The hard drives were in a wet box at the curb.
We feel like we are drowning in perfectly usable computers.
I wish we could redistribute them around the world without paying postage. We did send about 10 to Eritrea once (486s for linux wordprocessing).
