All of a sudden I can't access my LAN card from BL 3.40

Maybe I never could? it's been months since I tried accessing it with BL
3.40

I see that

insmod rtl8139

results in

unresolved symbol skb_pad

I thought it was the same rtl8139.o I'd used in the past just fine, with
BL3.32 ?

The modules for BL 3.40 show a 8139too.o ?
That doesn't work, either.

Have I messed something up?

Help,
Thanks,
Sheldon

I had a problem with a PCMCIA ethernet module and also PCMCIA modem, with 2.2.26. In the config file for the small BL3.40 kernel, rtl8139 is NOT included as a module. Have you tried the 'big' kernel, which does include such support, for BL3.40 with rtl8139.o ? If that works, maybe Steven should recompile the small kernel with some specific ethernet module support. (I should also try it with the laptop ethernet card).

I suggest also tulip and 3c59x and 3c509 (have not checked them yet wih 3.40). Does adding module support make the kernel too large to fit onto a 2-floppy BL3.40?

My Accton cards (ISA) did work with 3.40 - ne and 8390 are supported.

Which other ethernet modules ARE working for other users with BL3.40?

I think with kernel 2.2.16 rtl8139 and tulip worked even though they were not listed in the config file. Things may have changed in 2.2.26. Maybe they were trying to make the kernel smaller by leaving out things that were needed to use some modules?

I don't know why mii.o won't work with David's 2.4.31 kernel.
Maybe the PIO thing needs to be set to Y or M? It is needed by most ethernet modules. Config NATSEMI is not set either and we just got one of those cards. I will experiment with kernel source from SW 10.2. The help file ought to mention mii.o somewhere.
