ar +x *.deb unpacks them nicely.

BL is not the best system for compiling with, obviously.

I compile with BL2 and BL3 using the appropriate compiler
packages from Slackware (including ar).

How did you manage to compile busybox with BL?
David suggested I might need newer kernel headers than 2.2.16.
