I cannot print as root with lpr:
ls -l lpr
-r-s--s--x

Does this mean I can print as superuser?

I am trying to print plain text emails while dialed into a bbs using Pine.
I can do this without any special effort from DOS using kermit.
Pine at the bbs is set to use lpr.

I have insmodded parport, parport_pc, lp and started lpd.
I can print files offline as user, but not as root.
(I had to chmod +r the file I had written as root before printing as user).

Is there any reason not to chmod +x lpr so I can print as root with lpr (from xpdf, xv, Opera...).

I know I am supposed to go online as user but kermit does not have the permissions to dial (/var/lock is -rw-r--r--). I dialed with pppd as root and now ssh says ssh: /dev/ttyp0: permission denied. (Why is it set that way when the other ttyp's are not?). Should I change ttyp0 and ssh as user? Should I change /var/lock?

telnet (BL2 and kermit versions) works as user but I still can't print from Pine with 'Y'. It says it is printing to attached desktop printer (I think - goes by too fast) and Print command cancelled but does not print. Dot-matrix printer, works in DOS.

Why does ssh but not telnet need ttyp0?

I can transfer my emails from the bbs and print them but it takes longer. I was hoping to print the more interesting ones from the 2200 list mails I have accumulated, to empty the mailbox.

I will go back to DOS to print mails unless someone can help with this.
