NanoX is similar to X11. From what I understand of it, NanoX has
a nanox server, as well as window managers and other clients.
It is not compatible with X11, but you can use some X11
applications with NanoX, after recompiling.

MPlayer in general can. However, I left out svgalib support from
the static mplayer.tgz.
