When I try to dial with eznet, it often times out with the message:

LCP timeout sending Config-Requests

I am using a free internet account which tends to be slow to answer (and also slow in use when they are busy, and they cut you off in 1 hour).

A web search eventually informed me that the default is 10 attempts by LCP (what is that?) to connect and you can change it in /etc/ppp/options.

I also learned that mtu and mru (packet sizes) are set to 552 by default, which is good for slower modems such as 28.8K (see the transcript.? files in /var/eznet) and can also be changed.

Since I have a 56K that connects at 53333, I added to the /etc/ppp/options file so that it now reads

local
crtscts
lcp-max-terminate 20 (instead of 10)
mtu 1500
mru 1500

It dialed and connected on the first try, and I am hoping that it will also work a bit faster now.

Instead of using eznet it might be possible to dial with the line in transcript.0: /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 115200 connect (etc.), which fills in the user name for you, but I can't find the phone number anywhere but eznet.conf.
