Your CPU is fast. My PII needs -vo vesa to get a good display.

Our latest computer (which works now that we unplugged and replugged RAM, cpu, bios) is a K6-2/533, in what looks like a super socket 7 (like the 300 and 350 K6 that were not PII). Is K6-2 equivalent to PI or PII as regards mplayer compatibility? It was given to us with 256 MB RAM.

My partner says FreeDOS works better if you substitute 4dos for command.com. He was having trouble formatting a drive before this.
We are going to defrag by copying files between partitions.

Add the -noaspect option to play at the "standard" resolution.
This also speeds things up a little. You can do all kinds of
goofy resizes to the video with MPlayer (the kitchen sink of
video players)

Would this squash it sideway to fit on the monitor?

No. It would play at the standard DVD aspect ratio.

I will try playing with Xvesa set to 800x600, and lose the left and right edges of the 854x480.
