chmod +x 1.sh was needed, then it installed perfectly. I ended up with the original mplayer.tgz (which I had renamed back from mplayer.tgz) and an mplayer2.tgz, which I installed (and then renamed mplayerp1.tgz).

/usr/local/bin/mplayer (this version) is 7MB
Your first version for PI was 6MB unpacked.

They both act the same when I try to play an mp3 file:

Opening audio decoder:
MPElib:
AUDIO:
Selected audio codec:
Checking audio filter chain
AF-pre: af format
AF_pre: 44100Hz
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound

Mplayer -ao pcm scarlatti.mp3 produces an audiodump.wav which sox plays.

sb16 card on a PI 200MHz. The audio device works with sox. Are you sure you compiled for OSS this time?

Are there any logs I can make for you to debug with?
This is BL2 with glibc 2.2.5, and five sound modules from Christoff,
and /dev/dsp, same as on the PIII where mplayer does play sound.

I've attached a small fix for this file. You may
use it to get md5sum e4f7c042e7001ddbaf2cbae5fb40a2ce
(correct) from 3e28333557eb9a85e2b0cf7d8f3f6c4e (wrong)

Gunzip and run the attached shell script in the same
directory as mplayer.tgz. You will end up with 4 new
files: 1, 2, 3, and mplayer2.tgz. You may delete all
except mplayer2.tgz, which may then be renamed to
mplayer.tgz and successfully installed.

Mplayer installation has failed (again).
I have bzip2 and bunzip2 that I used on the first mplayer.bz2.

md5sum on the package:
3e28333557.....

The busybox wget won't work at your site:
wget: too many redirections

I was asked about a cookie with lynx but it handled any redirections.
I presume links will also work there.
