I thought that was true connection speed, until Steven corrected me.
The connection speed is just what the modem says it's connected at.
Sometimes it just repeats the baud rate of the serial port, which is
what you have here. To get the true connection rate you'll have to
try downloading something and measuring the time it takes.

Why do you want that? If you tell it to not connect at the low rate,
and the modem has trouble getting a good connection, you'll never
get connected.

I've got two real modems, one is a PCMCIA card for a laptop, the
other is the ISA one I mentioned earlier. I also have two fake
modems: an LTmodem (which I got to work with BL) and a PCTel
softmodem in my laptop.

The PCMCIA modem is far less likely than the others to get full v.90
speed. Both the PCMCIA and the ISA modem were originally X2 modems,
but I flash upgraded them. The PCMCIA modem reports full speed, the
ISA modem just always says "CONNECT 57600". Bummer.
