I ran across http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?threadid=88991 in which someone is trying to find a use for his 486 with 4MB RAM as an X terminal. He could not get Slackware 9 to work for this purpose even with 24MB swap file. It was continuously swapping and took 30 sec to respond to the mouse. Would BL3 be useful for this? I recall that 3MB was not sufficient to run X, but I think I could run it very slowly (one program at a time) with 4MB.

This was while I was trying to find some way to contact the author(s) of Xvesa to ask why 8-bit color is not working properly.
