First time I booted with this kernel I tried to do ppp-on from the X menu and nothing happened, and when I tried from console it gave me the message about lacking kernel support.

The regular kernel worked with ppp right after that and numerous other times.

I rebooted with the pentium kernel.

ppp-on
It put me to the prompt again without even going off hook.

ppp-on
Started to dial, script failed.

ppp-on
Finally worked, third try.

Rebooted and it worked again once and here I am.

I think maybe pppd is not quite as good in BL3 as in BL2. I also could not get it working with my external 56K modem tho BL2 works with it every time.

I don't know why the pentium kernel was having more problems. Maybe it is unrelated to the kernel. To time of day? But it would not even try the first time I typed ppp-on after rebooting a few minutes ago.

I downloaded this kernel from the first add-on site at 5.4K, at 5 pm. Must be nobody else online at that time.

I might some day attempt to compile pppd for BL3 from newer source code (SW7.1).

This kernel appears to lack support for ppp.

I suggest you do:
-----------
insmod slhc
insmod ppp
-----------
I was using the exact same software with both kernels - the standard and the p1 optimized, including an rc with both of these already insmod'ed, as I tried to explain in the part of my email you did not copy. The p1 kernel would not ppp-on, and right after that (with no other changes except to the hd.bat file) the standard version worked and I emailed you while booted with it.

The error message suggested that either the modules were not loaded or th kernel lacked ppp support. The modules were loaded. Do you mind trying this once yourself?

Cheers,
Steven
