Will,

Is your cable modem a router?If not,your sharing internal network
bandwidth,not really a good thing.If on the other hand it is a router/modem
combo (common in ADSL use) then simply run netsetup and assign your ethernet
card any IP address below the first IP assigned by the router;e.g.,if your
router assigns 192.169.1.97 as the first IP address,assign your linux box an
address of 192.168.1.95 or below.All devices (including network printers)
will then happily co-exist with an static IP below the first assigned.
