It can also run Linux (in fact this is the default method of
starting LILO in BL1 and BL3). The DOS boot manager starts,
looks in the partition table for the bootable partition, and
boots it. If LILO is sitting at the beginning of the bootable
partition, it will boot Linux.

The advantage of using the DOS boot manager to start LILO is the
ease of turning it off/on. Simply use fdisk (either DOS or Linux)
to change the bootable partition.
