I finally did that, too.

On a 1998 ASUS P5A motherboard with AMD K6-2 CPU.
HDs and a 1.44 floppy drive. And the DOS that comes with Windows 98.

It worked fine.

Then I started futzing with MAKE_FD.BAT, as below

--------

@echo off
echo Have two blank 1.44Mb formatted disks ready
pause
del part*.*
cls
echo.
echo.
echo working...
call .\split.exe .\baslinux.gz part /p /s400 >nul
dir part*.*
pause
ren part.001 part1
cls
echo.
echo.
copy /b part.00* part2 >nul
del part.00*
dir part*.*
echo ----------------------------
echo Insert blank disk 1 in drive A:
echo ----------------------------
pause
echo.
dir A:\
pause
echo Making kernel etc on floppy
call .\fdimage.exe -q bl2-fd.img a:
copy loadlin.exe a:\
copy zimage a:\
copy part1 a:\
dir a:\
echo.
echo.
echo ----------------------------
echo After floppy light goes out,
echo Insert blank disk 2 in drive A:
echo ----------------------------
echo.
pause
echo OK
copy .\part2 a:\
dir a:\
pause
IF exist a:\part2 del .\part*.*
echo.
echo.
echo All done, remove floppy disk 2.
echo To run RAMdisk BasicLinux, reinsert floppy disk 1 and reboot
