I installed kbd.tgz on my computer. Now in ./usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts I
have a long list of fonts (all ending in .gz) which I can install with the
setfont command. They are not named Arial or Verdana. Some are for
things like Vietnamese or Cyrillic, but most are variations on Latin, with
names like s or t. I deleted 90% of these because they were trying to be
artistic, not legible. Some are 8x8 or 8x9 or 8x14 (smaller than the
standard 8x16). You can also design your own fonts (same ones that work
in DOS) and load those.

There is also a gui-based program (which I don't use since it is designed
to work in color) that will list all the fonts for you and let you choose
one to install.

You can put a line in some file (in etc/rd.d directory?) to load the font
of your choice each time you boot.

I prefer the default font.
