I agree. The full Mozilla is too heavy to be the primary
browser for a 486. Firebird is slightly better, but probably
best used as a secondary browser (the one you use when your
primary browser hits a page that is too demanding). For the
primary 486 browser, I would recommend dillo or links -g.

I prefer FireBird to Mozilla. Firebird is a stripped down
version of Mozilla.

Opera definitely works better on a 486 than Mozilla.

/etc/inittab

In the c1 line, replace /sbin/agetty with /bin/bash -login
