Yes, but when I did, it sent those return
keys and refused to login.

Just to make sure... you're talking about
modem initialization, right? I mean the ATZ
and other commands used by the software to
make sure that the modem works and is
plugged in.

I checked this by removing all the expect
and reply commands in eznet.conf. It still
resulted in that same large delay.

OK, here goes. I hope there's no message

I'm assuming that "Send: '\r'" means a carriage
return. Is that correct? Also, what does UQKT2 mean?
I hope this helps.

I don't know if I understand properly.
Suppose you have baslinux.gz in /root
You did:
============================
gunzip baslinux.gz
insmod loop
mount -o loop baslinux /mnt
cd /mnt
============================
You translated files in /mnt/bin, /mnt/etc ...
and now want to gzip baslinux image?
Do:
============================
cd /
umount /mnt
cd /root
gzip baslinux
============================
You should have now baslinux.gz
Or do you want to gzip directory with subdirectories?
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(But it doesn't have anything with translating baslinux.gz !)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gzip _CAN_ compress _ONLY_ _ONE_ file.
That's why you have to use tar first.
=====================================
tar cv directory_with_subdirs > file.tar
gzip file.tar
=====================================
You should have now file.tar.gz
