In general, I agree with Steve below.

I suspect that I’m one of the more serious violators on this list as far as
numbers of posts, at least it is my opinion that I’m spending too much time
responding. Which is why I have instituted a personal policy that I won’t
respond to posts that last more than two or three screens long, nor even
read them (Jim Stinehard, anyone else?). Most linguistic questions can be
held to one or two paragraphs, no more than about 100 words. So to be
generous, one idea is to limit messages to no more than 250 words, and no
more than one message per thread per day. Or as Steve mentioned, two
messages per thread but limit total words for both to 250. It is possible to
write software that can track messages, their authorship, then to truncate
and/or reject any messages that violate the rules. That would be completely
automatic, with no input from the moderators.

I think that would get rid of another situation that has happened to me,
namely that people have responded to something that I wrote, then before I
could respond, a moderator closed the thread, then I was accused of avoiding
the question. Limiting the size and number of responses I believe is less
likely to lead to thread closure.

Finally, I think that the one who initiates a thread, may have no more than
one message for the first day of that thread, and it be limited to 250
words, automatically truncated.
