I have never seen "dug" used to describe an attack by either lions or dogs.
Are there any examples of such usage in English? I am also unable to visualize an
animal digging a person's hands or feet. Is this a uniquely Hebrew way of describing an
animal attack?
This is of course not an English expression, but a Hebrew one. In English we might say "mauled", with much the same meaning. For, as Karl just wrote:
It is rare that the semantic domain of a word in one language has the exact
semantic domain of a corresponding word in another language. ... Sometimes a
translator will use terms that seem unrelated to the terms used in the
original text in order to get the meaning across in a fluid, readable manner
while a literal translation may not make sense in the target language.
