Rohl suggests that this Abibaal's great-grandson was Shipitbaal, a
contemporary of Tiglath-Pileser III of Assyria dated to 738 BCE. Partly
on this basis he dates Sheshonk I to around 800 BCE, and identifies him,
campaigning in Israel, with the saviour of Israel in 2 Kings 13:5 who is
also dated to around 800 BCE.

The genealogies of the kinks of Byblos was figgured out by Mazar and others
long ago. But why would Sheshonq I, who (according to his own inscription)
ravaged Israel, be considered a "savior" by the Bible? This "savior" is
usually thought to be Adad-Nirari III, who subjugated Aram and Israel,
saving Israel from teh Arameans.

Because, Sheshonq's campaign focused on the northern kingdom of Israel and the Negev, avoiding Judean cities (except for Aijalon in the far western mountains). This would be yet another example - if true - of one of the two Hebrew polities sitting back while a more powerful foreigner takes out its bordering rival.

Best Salaams,

Brian Roberts
