Two weeks ago we had a great crowd and were well organized, so we got over 1,000 plants in the ground in one day?and got them in the right places too. Folks collaborated to design the planting pattern for each patch as they worked. We had a lot of fun and things look great! Thanks VERY MUCH to everyone who showed up to help out. We still have about 500 plants to get in the ground, though, so would love to see folks come out again this Saturday, May 9 from 9-5. If you came to help already we?ll welcome you back with open arms. If you haven?t helped us before, we?ll welcome you with open arms too! We?ll have a crew on hand to guid, support and teach you as we work with heart to ?plant until we?re planted.? IF YOU PLAN TO COME SATURDAY PLEASE RSVP to wcbgfriends at wellesley.edu so we can plan logistics. Come check out the garden, help us continue to get this design in the ground by planting, dividing perennials, weeding, and sheet mulching. Please bring a shovel, iron rake, and gardening gloves if you can, along with personal items (water, sun hat, *your own lunch,* etc.). The garden lies west of the Whitin Observatory on the Wellesley College campus, 106 Central St., Wellesley, MA (***PARKING is in the lots north or east of the Science Center a short walk away***): https://www.google.com/maps/place/Whitin+Observatory/@42.295024,-71.302611,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89e386c68b5dbf0b:0x3e87f2c21fdeca68 In google maps ?earth? view, you can see the gardens and our large scale sheet mulch experiments in the aerial photo. Much has changed since the photo was taken, but it?s pretty cool to see the garden in googlemaps anyway? We hope to see you there, and look forward to sharing and working with you. They have some great stuff in their greenhouses too that you may want to check out! The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced that Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week is May 18-24. If you are concerned about this invasive insect and the threat to our native ash trees, then please consider attending a free workshop on collecting ash seed at CCE on Tuesday May 19 from 6:30-8:30 pm. The participants of this workshop will be introduced to the protocol for collecting ash seed, learn how to identify ash species and learn about preserving genetic diversity through seed. It is our hope that the information you gain from this workshop will result in your contribution of ash seed collections to both the Mid-Atlantic Regional Seed Bank (MARSB) and the National Ash Conservation Project. Ash trees don't produce seed every year, but this spring the ash trees are flowering and it looks like this will be a good year for collecting seed Native seed collection is imperative for the preservation, conservation and reclamation of plant communities in decline. Faced with the loss of ash (Fraxinus) species as a result of the Emerald Ash Borer, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Seed Bank and the USFS National Seed Lab are collecting ash seed across New York State for preservation. Collecting seed is a fast and inexpensive way to preserve germplasm. By conserving the genetic diversity of ash species before the populations are lost, we have more opportunities to adequately restore the species to the landscape once a successful biological control is found. This workshop is your opportunity to become involved in an unique and exciting regional seed collection network. We are eager to create permanent relationships with botanists and naturalists interested in native seed collection. We hope to see you on May 19th! This workshop is free, but spaces are limited. The film captures an intense conflict over one piece of land. Compelling characters on both sides of the battle create a remarkable narrative in which community members employ an ingenious strategy to confront a powerful institution in the effort to preserve public land for urban farming. >From preparing the soil to police raids, from lawsuits to overflowing harvests, Occupy the Farm reveals a determined community responding with a direct action to address a major social need: healthy food and access to public land. Join us on May 19th at Cinemapolis at 7:00 pm. There will be speakers from our community and lots of smiling faces. The film will be introduced by Rafael Aponte, Farmer and owner of Rocky Acres Community Farm and who represents Groundswell and their Youth Farm Project For the after-screening Q&A Rafael will be joined by Ann Piombino, the Youth Farm Manager and by Jhakeem Haltom from Ithaca's Congo Square Market Watch the trailer:https://vimeo.com/117053430 The facebook link is: https://www.facebook.com/events/998974523453573/ Critics Say: ?Riveting from the start?, says the Village Voice?s film critic Ernest Handy about OCCUPY THE FARM. ?It illustrates the staggering extent to which corporate interests dictate policy and shape scientific research.? ?Sweeps up the viewer in a fast-paced, character-driven narrative,? says Sarah Burke in her film review of OCCUPY THE FARM in East Bay Express. ?Empowering food for thought,? says Los Angeles Times film critic Michael Rechtsaffen. *The film raises big issues about the public mission of Land Grant Universities and how it has been - and continues to be undermined by big agriculture, big food, big pharm...Please come, watch the film, and be part of the discussion of how we can work together - campus and community - to promote the PUBLIC MISSION of our own Land Grant university here in NY.* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
