All three sessions will be held at 4-H Acres - Lower Creek Rd. off Route 13. At the first workshop, Janice Degni, CCE agronomist, will discuss soil resources, including the relationship between soil type, drainage and land use; understanding and using the soil survey; and the process for bringing an overgrown field back into production. Brett Chedzoy, CCE Forestry Educator, will discuss forest resources at the second workshop. In this presentation, he will cover topics that include: assessing your woods; why and how to manage your woods; adding value; tree management; profitable tree planting; and pests, invasives, and wildlife. At the final workshop, Monika Roth (CCE Ag Educator), Ian Bailey (Finger Lakes LandLink), Jon Negley (TCSWCD) and Patrick Barry (USDA NRCS), will present on Land Ownership Logistics and Opportunities. They will cover topics including: land taxes and agricultural assessment; leasing land to farmers; Finger Lakes Land Link; and resources and support that is available via the TCSWCD, USDA NRCS and Groundswell. Master Composter-level material will be presented in a shorter series, and without a requirement to volunteer. Participants will learn the biology, chemistry and physics behind the compost process, test and use compost in a variety of ways and know how to stop trouble (i.e. pests or smells) before it starts. Master Composters and guest presenters will teach some advanced applications of composting like capturing the heat generated, and making compost "tea." If you are someone with some compost experience, and wish to take your knowledge and practice to the next level, we hope you will join us. Cost is $30 for the three-class series. I have a conflict that day and cannot make it. If you are willing and able, I would be happy to meet with you during the week to go over the very basic plan (weeding and mulching), assemble and deliver tools, and meet afterward if needed for clean up.
