I think everyone should - at minimum - know the basic use of the GPS, including being able to note the Lat/Long and translating that across to a paper map location. Hands-on training, repeated periodically to reinforce the training.

Basic uses for Garmin Rino in SAR include:
- You can program a search route to follow.
- You can program the GPS to track where you actually go, which can be downloaded into a laptop later as a record for that search.
- Use the radio function to communicate within / between teams. (Consider investing $80 in a GMRS license to use the longer distance transmission capability.)
- Use the locator function to keep track of where the personnel are (this transmits only on FRS)
- Make a habit of reporting the team's Lat/Long when you call in

We just obtained four Rino 130 GPS units. What is the best way to train our 20 volunteers to use them? How are they best used? What skills are needed by everyone? Does everyone need to have the ability to use all the capabilities of the unit?
