No, I guess that would not accurately describe the norm here either. I
would have to
say the norm is some where between line searches and larger searches but
still a far
cry from what MSAR is capable of.
The point I was trying to go for was that I do not know of any MSAR group
any where besides my group that has certification standards or training's
that are similar to the air scenting dog test as described below.

Certifying K9 Air Scenting Test
Day search - 40 to 60 acres - one subject in 1/2 hours
Night Search - 80 acres, one subject in three hours.
Advanced day search -140 TO 160 acres locate two moving subjects in Five
hours

If you have a experienced MSAR searcher with average riding abilities and a
regular mount in most cases in areas that are rideable, you could easily
pass at least two of the three above test using a standard grid search using
only one mounted searcher.
Now I know that not every area is rideable but as a rule there are more
areas that are rideable than not. The areas that are not rideable could be
searched by MSAR on foot or if it was a hasty search just marked on a map
and be searched later at management's discretion. Just think what a
improvement it would be if each MSAR could cover ground similar to the above
test.
