Hi Folks! Interesting topic. Our local volunteer SAR team dealt with this
issue as ground pounders a few years ago. The word came down from State
Police that guns were not allowed on missions. The legality can probably be
debated since New Mexico law allows for open carry. The state was working on
concealed carry but I don't know how far along it is. I agree that the
choice to carry a gun is and should be a personal decision. I have never
(thank God!) had to use a gun in self defense. I have never had a situation
on a SAR mission where one was necessary. However, when trail riding my wife
and I always carry our pistols. It's usually not the four- legged critters
that a person requires protection from, its the two-legged. It's not a good
thing to be out riding in the forest and stumble on somebody's marijuana
patch, especially while they're harvesting. I have encountered some pretty
nasty looking characters that I wouldn't turn my back on until they were
plumb out of sight. Probably the best protection if possible, is never
traveling alone.
