"Space is available to any small-scale grower/producer from Tioga or
surrounding counties who does not have a permanent outlet for his or her
product. Vendors with larger operations or who have home-based stands are
not eligible."

Vendors with larger operations or who have home-based stands are usually
icons in the community and if not included in the plan will always be a
divisive influence on the local market. If the local icons are included they
have a collective army of built in clientele that will come out to see what
its all about and that gives all the smaller farmers exposure they would not
otherwise get.

All you small thinkers out there need to get over the fear of competition
and believe in what you do enough to realize that the value of the products
you either grow or process into value added items possess a quality level
that speaks for itself and will be recognized for its quality when the
people come to the market. Do whatever you can to get people coming out even
if you have to let farm stand owners and buy/sell people in to get it going.
Everybody needs to make a living and the buy/sell people are also helping
some farmers make a living.

The quality seekers will always seek the quality, the heirlooms, the
organics regardless of price differential and the fixed and lower income
people will always seek the bargain prices regardless of quality, and then
sometimes splurge for some special things when they are in local season.

Also small local garden farmers can develop working relationships and even
network with the larger farm stand owners and buy/sell people to expand
their markets to them as well, chances are they are also going to sell
somewhere you are not on a different day and can sell your products
elsewhere at other markets or their place of normal business.

We have sold at farmers markets now for over 25 years from the smallest
tailgate to state agricultural markets and networking with an open mind with
all that participate instead of dreading the competition will open doors for
you that you would have never dreamed even existed.

I wanted to add that the policy of this Farmer's Market, as stated by the
Market Manager is:

"Space is available to any small-scale grower/producer from Tioga or
surrounding counties who does not have a permanent outlet for his or her
product. Vendors with larger operations or who have home-based stands are
not eligible."

That makes me not eligible, but the market manager came out to my
farmstand and decided I was "small enough" to participate if I wanted.
What the heck kind of policy is that?
